Horta in Azores

Horta is a charming town located on the island of Faial in the Azores archipelago, which is part of Portugal.

The crews of sailboats that make a stopover at the port of Horta create their own small fresco or painting on the quay wall before departing. This wall, known as the "Painted Wall" or "Wall of Sailors," has become famous for its multiple layers of colorful paintings made by sailors from around the world over the decades.

According to tradition, sailors leave their mark on the wall by painting drawings, messages, boat names, or insignias to symbolize their passage and journey. Some also include their geographical coordinates to indicate their route. It is a way for sailors to leave a trace of their voyage and a part of themselves in Horta.

It is said that not participating in this tradition and not leaving one's mark on the quay wall can bring bad luck on the next crossing or be considered a bad omen.
